Local SEO Basics for Service Businesses
People talk about "SEO" like it's a dark art. For a local service business, it mostly isn't. It comes down to a few things you can understand and do yourself. No wizard required.
How Google picks local businesses
Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher or the area they searched.
- Prominence: how well-known and trusted your business seems, including reviews and what the rest of the web says about you.
You can't change distance. Forget it. Work on the other two.
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
For most local businesses, this is the single most important step. Half a profile won't do.
- Primary category: pick the one that best describes your main service. It matters more than almost anything else on the profile.
- Additional categories: add others only if they truly apply.
- Services: list each service you offer, with a plain description.
- Service area: if you go to customers, list the cities or areas you serve and hide your home address.
- Hours, phone, website: accurate and consistent.
- Photos: real ones of your work, team and vehicles, added regularly.
- Description: what you do and where, in normal sentences.
2. Earn reviews, the right way
Reviews help both your visibility and whether people choose you. They won't show up on their own. Ask.
- Ask every customer after every job.
- Send a direct link so it takes them seconds.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely.
- Never buy reviews, offer rewards for them, write your own, or ask only happy customers. All of these break Google's rules, and fake reviews, or rewards for positive ones, are banned by US federal rules.
3. Keep your details consistent everywhere
Boring. Still matters. Your business name, address (or service area) and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google profile, Facebook, Yelp and the main directories for your trade. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust which information is right.
4. Make your website back it up
Your website helps Google understand what you do and where.
- One clear page for each main service.
- Mention the areas you serve naturally, not as a list of 50 town names.
- Your name, phone and service area on every page, usually in the footer.
- Fast loading and easy to use on a phone.
- A clear page title on each page, like "Water Heater Repair in Phoenix | Your Business Name".
5. Stay active
A profile you set up once and forgot isn't working as hard as it could. Post updates and photos on your Google profile, answer questions, and keep your hours current, especially around holidays. An active profile gives customers more reasons to choose you.
What to avoid
- Keyword stuffing your business name ("Joe's Plumbing Best Plumber Phoenix"): against the rules and a common reason for suspension.
- Fake addresses or virtual offices you don't really work from.
- More than one profile for the same location.
- Anyone promising "#1 on Google" or guaranteed map rankings. Nobody controls Google's results. Not them, not us.
How long it takes
Setting up the basics takes days to a couple of weeks. Seeing the effect in Google Maps usually takes weeks to months, depending on your competition and how quickly your reviews grow. That's normal. It's also why consistency beats quick tricks.
Where to start
Three things this week. Complete every section of your Google Business Profile. Ask your last ten customers for a review. Make sure your phone number is the same everywhere.
